TRANSLATION INDEX

The following index is divided into three parts. The first contains proper names, the second lists forms of familiar address as well as forms of salutation and valediction, and the third is a general index of subjects. The Stephanus pages listed in each entry refer to passages in which that name, word, or phrase is used explicitly. Numbers in boldface refer to the numbers of the letters.

An asterisk next to a Stephanus page number indicates that the word appears more than once in that section of text. By necessity, the Stephanus page numbers given in the margins of this translation do not match exactly their location in the Greek edition to which they refer, and the page numbers in this index refer to the latter. As a result, one will often find a word said in this index to appear within a given Stephanus page in the first lines of the following one (or, more rarely, in the last lines of the preceding).

Each entry in this index refers to a Greek word or family of words, a primary example of which is given in transliteration (except for proper names). Since many Greek words are incapable of being rendered consistently by the same English word, many entries in the index list several English words before giving the Greek. For any given appearance of the Greek word to which an entry refers, any of the English words supplied may have been used in the translation. In instances where I was compelled to deviate even from the English words so listed, I have indicated in parentheses both the specific Greek word appearing at that place in the text and the corresponding English word used in the translation.

It should be stressed that each entry will generally list occurrences of both the Greek word indicated and related Greek words. For example, the entry for the noun “letter (epistolē)” also lists appearances of the verb epistellō, “to send a letter.” Likewise, related words differing, say, by the addition or change of a prefix are usually listed together under the same entry without explicit mention of the fact—for instance, the entry for “sending (pempō)” includes instances of the closely related verb apopempō, which will have been rendered in translation by some form of the English word “send,” or by a phrase containing that word.
