Acknowledgments
I am grateful to Dean Smith, Director of Cornell University Press, for nurturing this project over three years. When he reviewed my first draft manuscript, Dean told me that it wasn’t good enough to publish, but it had the potential to be an interesting book. As I worked to produce subsequent drafts Dean always invested the time to read them and explain their deficiencies, and always encouraged me by saying my project had high potential and my story was important to tell. Dean eventually suggested that I should work with Emily Hopkins to produce a polished manuscript. Emily spent many hours talking with me to understand the nuances of my story, and she interviewed ten of the people mentioned in my manuscript to gain insights through the eyes of others who experienced the events I described. Emily skillfully edited and rewrote my manuscript so that it was transformed from my “business memo” style into a more engaging story dialogue, and I thank Emily for her good work. I also thank my friends and colleagues who took the time to be interviewed by Emily. Finally, I’m very appreciative of the skilled professionalism that the Cornell University Press team brought to this project. This includes Ange Romeo-Hall, Managing Editor, who coordinated the editing and production; Martyn Beeny, Marketing Director, and his team; Amanda Heller, who provided skillful copyediting to polish the manuscript; and Scott Levine, Art Director, who designed the interior and the cover.
