The Sacramento area was, and still is, the Tribal land of the Nisenan people. Sacramento is a gathering place for many local Indigenous Nations, including the Southern Maidu people to the north, the Valley and Plains Me-Wuk peoples to the south of the American River, and the Patwin Wintun peoples to the west of the Sacramento River.
When we talk about land, land is part of who we are.
It’s a mixture of our blood, our past, our current, and our future.
We carry our ancestors in us, and they’re around us. As you all do.
—Great-grandmother Mary Lyons, Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe
