ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

I am indebted to those individuals who encouraged and assisted me with this book amid the masked bewilderment of the COVID-19 era. Joshua Botts, Hal Brands, Seth Center, Charles Edel, Francis Gavin, and William Inboden each motivated me to start and finish this book. My colleagues Paul Pitman and Kathleen Rasmussen read large portions of the manuscript; Elizabeth Charles and Kristin Ahlberg offered vital support. James Cameron and David Milne did as well.

I have had the great fortune to get to know stalwarts of the arms control community who shared memories of working with Paul Nitze in some capacity. These include James Goodby, Thomas Graham Jr., and Stan Riveles, who read an early draft manuscript in its entirety and offered helpful feedback. Adene and Richard Wilson read a later version. My mentor and friend Melvyn Leffler also read a draft manuscript. I thank Frank Costigliola and Richard Immerman for their encouragement.

I am grateful to Sarah Grossman, Jacqulyn Teoh, and Mary Kate Murphy at Cornell University Press, and Michael McGandy, who advocated for this book. I thank Abigail Michaud for serving as the production editor and Vickie Jacobs for preparing the index.

I am exceedingly thankful to Mary Barton, my love. And to our son Remy, a young man of action.
