Acknowledgments

I owe a deep debt of gratitude to my friend Alex Goldfarb, a close aide and associate of Berezovsky for a number of years. I have not only relied on Alex’s insightful writings about Berezovsky, which are cited throughout the book; I also have benefited from long conversations with him, which have inspired and informed me. In addition, I owe thanks to others in Berezovsky’s circle and family who generously gave me time for interviews: Elizaveta Berezovskaya, Gleb Berezovsky, Michael Cotlick, Iulii Dubov, Elena Gorbunova, Marina Litvinenko, and Akhmed Zakaev. Elizaveta Berezovskaya also kindly provided me with important research material, as did Gleb Berezovsky. Additionally, Peter Morgan, creator of the London play Patriots, about Putin and his oligarchs, was kind enough to share his time with me to talk about Putin and Berezovsky.

I could not have written this book without the invaluable help of my literary agent, Philip Turner, who encouraged me to write the proposal and successfully found a home for the book at Cornell University/NIU Press. Philip also read the manuscript in its entirety and made many useful suggestions. My editor, Amy Farranto, has helped me greatly in improving the manuscript and has been a pleasure to work with, always patient and responsive. Jessica Landy was essential in locating photographs and obtaining permissions, just as she was with a previous book. I am also grateful to my production editor, Karen M. Laun, and my copyeditor, Carolyn Pouncy, for their indispensable role in the transformation of my manuscript into a book.

Special thanks are also due to my friend at The Guardian, Luke Harding, who has kindly shared his insights and information with me, and to Peter Reddaway, a mentor to me as a student at the London School of Economics. Finally, I am thankful for the encouragement of my daughter, the writer/producer Molly Knight Raskin. Molly’s energy and enthusiasm for my writing, our shared interest in Russia, and her willingness to listen when I have faced problems have made me a better author and a better person.
